Tooth’s Brewery Invicta Hospital Brandy Poster

$24.00$85.00

John Tooth, a native of Kent, England, realised the potential for a brewery in Sydney, and in partnership with his brother-in-law, Charles Newnham, built a brewery in 1835 on a 5-acre block of land at what was then called Blackwattle Creek.

During the early part of the twentieth century the company expanded through the acquisition of many country and city breweries. Most were closed, effectively shutting out competition, but some continued brewing for a few more years. Many of the closed breweries were used as depots.

In 1924, Federal Distilleries Pty Ltd was created by the joining of four Victorian distilleries which were: Federal Distillery, Warrenheip (which was now called Henry Brinds and Co.), Brehney Bros and Kennas Pty Ltd.  Federal Distilleries released brands such as Brind’s Extra Matured Whisky and Old Court Whisky.

The massive Corio Distillery was built in Geelong in 1928, becoming Australia’s largest distillery, overtaking Federal Distilleries. By 1929, Corio Distillery was producing 500,000 gallons of Australian whisky per year, but wouldn’t release any until 1934, the whisky was aged at least 5 years in oak barrels. In 1930, Federal Distilleries Pty Ltd, the Old Court Whisky Group and Corio Distillery all merged under a new company name of United Distilleries.

I have included this poster because Tooth’s brewery had their name on it – Invicta was the motto on their crest. Tooth’s would have a distillery make the hospital brandy and they would bottle it. They also sold other spirits. A lot of other breweries also sold spirits under licence.
