Boag’s ‘Matrimonial’ Ales & Stout Poster
$24.00 – $85.00
J. Boag & Son was relisted on the Australian Stock Exchange in November 1994. Since listing, J. Boag & Son was appointed as agent by Scottish & Newcastle, the Boston Beer Co. and Carlsberg to represent their brands throughout Australia.
In 1998 the company’s flagship brand, James Boag’s Premium Lager, was awarded the title of Grand Champion over 425 beers representing 100 breweries entered into the Australian International Beer Awards, the first time an Australian beer had won this prestigious title.
In 2000, the San Miguel Corporation of the Philippines acquired all the shares of J. Boag & Son and continued to run the business without any major change. However, ownership changed again in November 2007 with the New Zealand based Lion Nathan group taking control. Another change of ownership took place on 21 October 2009 when the Japanese brewer Kirin Holdings Co. Ltd purchased the assets of Lion Nathan. This included Boag’s Brewery which continues to produce its famous brands of beers.
James Boag’s is one Australia’s oldest breweries. In 1853 Scottish-born James Boag the elder (1822–90) arrived in Launceston. At sixteen, James junior (1854–1919) joined his father at John Fawns’ Cornwall Brewery and began planning the future partnership of James Boag & Son. In 1883 they purchased the up-to-the-minute Esk Brewery on the Esplanade.
Expansion was swift. By 1900 James junior had surpassed the Esk Brewery’s original production by over 7000 percent, established Boags as northern Tasmania’s favourite beer, and bought the neighbouring Cornwall Brewery. A great believer in local investment, he also acquired hotels, land and mining shares. He continued his youthful sporting interests through sponsorship, was a warden of the Launceston Marine Board, and rose to Lieutenant in the Launceston Volunteer Artillery.
Boag’s eldest son, also James Boag (1881–1944), succeeded him in the company. The family’s direct association with the brewery ended in 1976, with the retirement of James’ son, George Boag, though the company of James Boag & Son continues strong.
