Castlemaine Q 2% Draught ‘Q Up’ Poster

In 1877 Fitzgerald, Quinlan & Co. was formed in Brisbane. The partners were Edward and Nicholas Fitzgerald of Victoria, Robert Prendergast of Sydney, and Kate Quinlan and George Gray of Brisbane. The newly-formed company purchased the Milton Distillery (established in 1870) from Robert Forsyth in September 1877, and they built the Castlemaine Brewery on land adjoining the distillery. They had similar breweries in Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and of course the original in Castlemaine. They were the first Australia wide brewery company.

The first batch of beer was ready for sale in Brisbane on 13 September 1878. It was called Castlemaine XXX Sparkling Ale, and was described by the Brisbane Courier as ‘a delicious ale of the brightest amber, pleasant to the taste’. The company’s advertisement read: ‘Ale and Porter, equal in general quality to the famed Castlemaine Ale so popular for many years in the southern colonies’.

This brand was introduced as a low alcohol beer. Light Lager is usually 2.5-3 per cent alcohol by volume. Light had become fairly popular as drink driving prohibitions became stricter. It was relatively new to Australia because until the late 1970s it was illegal for breweries to brew beer below a certain alcohol limit. For many years, it wasn’t particularly tasteful and so was not well regarded. Additionally, the notion of a low alcohol beer was not particularly palatable – unfortunately light was known as a very unmanly beer. This was certainly was one of the lowest Alc/Vol beers in Australia.
