Castlemaine XXXX, ‘Tradition, Nature and Time’ Poster

Castlemaine Perkins Ltd has long dominated brewing in Queensland. The Castlemaine brewery in Brisbane was founded in 1877 but the name was brought from the Victorian gold-mining town of Castlemaine, where in the 1850s the Fitzgerald brothers had established a brewery which made particularly good beers. To cash in on the good name of Castlemaine beers, the enterprising owners formed partnerships to establish breweries using the name ‘Castlemaine’ in Fremantle, Newcastle, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, as well as the original Castlemaine – an early form of franchising. The Brisbane Castlemaine is the only survivor.

The building facing Milton Rd contains a substantial masonry industrial complex with considerable landmark and iconic values. The Milton brewery includes two highly visible neon signs (‘XXXX’ and ‘Mr Fourex’) and dominates the townscape of Milton and the surrounding area. The iconic value of these elements is reinforced by the depiction of the present Milton Road buildings on the labels of the brewery’s products and in their advertising. The business and location are firmly linked to perceptions of the city’s and state’s identity. The building containing the brewing tower, designed by architects, Addison and Macdonald, has architectural significance as a good example of the Interwar Functionalist style.

The extent of the listing boundary includes the building envelope of the 1940s brick building on Milton Road and the adjacent 1950s brick building extending to the western boundary, the 1919 flywheel and the XXXX and Mr Fourex neon signs.

The foundation of Castlemaine Perkins’s fortune has been the famous Castlemaine XXXX (or Fourex) Bitter Ale first released in 1924. It has a distinctive bitter flavour which results in part from the use of two different hop varieties. Other beers are Mild XXXX Gold (3.5% ale/vol) and XXXX Light Bitter (2.7%).
