Wig & Pen Brewery Aviator Bock poster

Price range: $24.00 through $85.00

The owner of the Wig and Pen, Lachlan McOmish, opened the brewery section of his tavern in 1994. The brewing equipment was purchased from the Craig Brewery, Darling Harbour, Sydney which had closed in 1992. The huge range of beers include Velvet Cream stout, Kiandra Gold Pilsner and Wig & Pen Pale Ale. It’s considered an important part of modern Australian craft beer history and has won the AIBA Champion Small Brewery trophy twice. The brewery started with a vision to create a microbrewery in Canberra and came to fruition with the help of brewer Richard Pass, who created some of the original beer recipes.

Here’s a more detailed look at the Wig & Pen’s history:
Lachlan McOmish conceived the idea of a microbrewery in Canberra and began assembling the necessary elements: premises, brewing equipment, and a brewer.
The Wig and Pen Tavern and Brewery officially opened its doors, becoming one of the first brewpubs in Canberra.
A talented homebrewer, Richard Pass was instrumental in the early brewing operations. He is remembered for some of the original beer recipes.
The brewery acquired its equipment from the defunct Craig Brewery in Darling Harbour, Sydney.
The Wig & Pen is notable for its traditional, cask-conditioned “real ales” which are hand-pumped, a rare find in Australia.

The brewery has expanded its beer selection, including lagers with long fermentation times, and has received recognition as Champion Small Brewery at the AIBA.
Richard Watkins, who later founded Bentspoke Brewing Co also spent 17 years as head brewer at the Wig & Pen.

In 2009, the Wig & Pen released its first bottled beer, Kembrey Regional Ale, after years of serving only draft beer.

In 2014, the Wig & Pen brewery announced it would be closing its original location due to a move to Llewellyn Hall.
In 2019, the brewery celebrated its 25th anniversary but also faced the prospect of a new chapter as Lachlan McOmish decided to sell the business. It was sold but it did close in 2022.
