Bux Ale North Fitzroy Poster

Although licensed as a brewery, the Bux Brewery probably had only a minimal
production of alcoholic beverages. The owners, Alfred Clarke and Jessie Evans,
started brewing in North Fitzroy in 1898. The previous year they started the Eureka
Aerated Waters & Brewing Co. at Ballarat. Both breweries produced a non-
intoxicating Bux Ale and Progress Brand soda water. Their rather unoriginal motto
was ‘You can never get too much of a good thing’. These type of ales were
legislated by the Government for the troops.

We can date this poster by the graphic of the soldier and the ship in the
background. The HMAT A7 Medic was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd, Liverpool,
and leased by the Commonwealth until 26 October 1917. The Medic was well
known by the Australian forces as it was a key troopship for Australia during the
Boer War, some 14 years before the re-engagement. It only came to Melbourne
once, in 1903.
