Hornby’s Artillery Brewery Williamstown Poster

$24.00$85.00

William Hornby bought John Breheny’s Marine Stockade Brewery business in 1868. The following year William Disher also became a partner, and the business, now known as the Artillery Brewery, traded as W. Hornby & Co.

William Disher, a big burly man, had gained his brewing experience in England. At the Artillery Brewery he put out Disher’s 10-Guinea Ale, which was much advertised in Melbourne. Although a jovial, good-natured gentleman, he was better at talking about brewing than making good beer, according to an observer.

Albert Terry of the West End Brewery, Melbourne, purchased the Artillery Brewery in 1883. Six years later, in 1889, he amalgamated his Artillery and West End breweries with the Melbourne Brewing & Malting Co. to form Carlton & West End Breweries Ltd. This new company became the Carlton Brewery Ltd in 1896.

The old Artillery Brewery at Williamstown was used as a storage depot, and the historic buildings were unfortunately demolished to make way for the construction of the Aitken Street Housing Commission flats.
