Bryant & Sheil Bros Buffalo Brewery Wangaratta
$24.00 – $85.00
Mt Buffalo, 70 km south-east of Wangaratta, was named by the explorers Hume and Hovell during their expedition from Sydney to Port Phillip Bay in 1824. From one vantage point the mountain resembles a buffalo, and it was this mountain view that inspired Bryant & Sheil Brothers to name their new brewery the Buffalo Brewery.
Construction was under way early in 1901, and brewing was started in 1902 by the partnership of Walter Garnet Bryant and William Sheil. This was the fourth brewery to be built by the company. Charles Bryant, Walter’s father, had started brewing at Maldon in 1863; he had operated other breweries in Stawell in 1881, and in Shepparton in 1885.
The Buffalo Brewery was built on farmland away from rivers, and at times it was completely surrounded by crops. Wells and a spring provided an unlimited supply of pure, crystal-clear water. It was the only brewery on the main road (now the Hume Highway) between Melbourne and Albury, and the excellent-quality beer was immediately popular. The company brewed Prize Ale, Bohemian Lager, Victorian Bitter Ale, and Buffalo Ale and Stout.
During 1914 he commenced production of aerated water and cordials in a new factory. On 4 August 1920 the business was registered as the Wangaratta Brewery Pty Ltd, but continued to trade as the Buffalo Brewery. Brewing ceased about 1950, and the five-storey tower and the chimney were demolished in 1957.
Cohn Brothers of Bendigo purchased the premises in 1961, and continued to make soft drinks.
