Tulloch & McLaren & Co Royal Standard Brewery Ballarat Poster

$24.00$85.00

Thomas McLaren migrated from Scotland, and in 1853 he started brewing in a small way in Armstrong Street. Ten years later a fellow-Scotsman, William Tulloch, became a partner, and they called their business the Royal Standard Brewery — Tulloch, previously a cattle dealer, gold-digger and storekeeper, had obtained approval from the Duke of Wellington to use the name Royal Standard. It also helped that his brother was the confessor to Queen Victoria.

The company traded as Tulloch & McLaren until 1890, and the business then continued as Tulloch & Sons. William Tulloch’s son, James, one of sixteen children, worked at the brewery as an executive officer and brewer. Branch depots were established at Melbourne and Geelong. Tulloch Snr became a member of the town council, the Old Colonists’ Association, the Art Gallery and the Mechanics’ Institute. He was also an excellent brewer, and his Bitter Beer and Ale were said to be the best beers on the market.

In 1895 the Royal Standard Brewery of Tulloch & Sons amalgamated with the Phoenix Brewery of James Coghlan to form Coghlan & Tulloch’s Ballarat Brewing Co. Pty Ltd.
