In 1881 the Esk Brewery was established on the banks of the Esk River in
Launceston, Tasmania. When James Boag I and his son, James Boag II, took over
the Esk Brewery, it was said to be the most complete in Tasmania. The name Esk
Brewery was retained although Boag’s Brewery became a frequent reference.

Under the leadership of James Boag the brewery quickly established a reputation
for brewing the highest quality beers. This poster is a testament to the style of beer
that was produced around 1900.

Our assumption that ‘Light Ale’ is a beer of lesser taste and low alcohol is not the
case here. Light ale was the start of a definitive Australian style beer which was to
replace the typical English ales that had proceeded it. A great graphic pun was
used by the artist to highlight the new style of beer.
