Ballarat Pilsener Poster

In 1895 the Royal Standard Brewery and the Phoenix Brewery Ballarat
amalgamated to form Coghlan and Tulloch’s Ballarat Brewing Company Limited.
Not long after this event the new brewery acquired the Barley Sheaf Brewery on the
Creswick Road. The new trademark of the company was a combination of the
Phoenix and the Royal Standard held in its beak. In 1910 the company changed its
name to The Ballarat Brewing Co Pty Ltd. The Phoenix Brewery was eventually
closed in 1911 and in 1936 the Ballarat Brewing Co Pty Ltd became a public

In 1926 the company launched its first major advertising campaign using the
famous “Ballarat Bertie”. Bertie made a significant impact in Melbourne. This poster
appeared before Ballarat Bertie arrived and shows us the fashion and architectural
styles of that time. The beer was also the start of lagering at the brewery.
