Boat Show Lager, Sanctuary Cove Brewing

$24.00$85.00

Queensland’s luxury Sanctuary Cove Resort was built on Hope Island, a short distance north of the Gold Coast. It was officially opened in January 1988.  A few months later the Sanctuary Cove Brewing Co., at the adjacent marine-village tourist complex, commenced production of Island Lager.

The brewing equipment was imported from Germany, and had a capacity to produce one million litres of beer annually. Both draught and bottled beers were brewed in the European lager-style, unpasteurised to retain the full flavour.

An extensive Queensland market was developed for bottled beer, with custom-designed labels for restaurants, companies, clubs and special events. Regular products became available in most of the capital cities in the eastern states, and the brewery began exporting beer to Japan. This poster was for one of their custom labels done for the Queensland Boat Show.

The resort, including the brewery, was taken over by Japanese investors. In July 1992 it was decided to close the brewery, which was then leased to a soft-drink manufacturer.

Brewing started again in October 1992, this time as the Luka Brewery, and continued until April 1995. The holding company of the Luka Brewery was Almond Tower Pty Ltd, and during 1994 ownership changed to Sabina Pacific Ltd.

Carlton & United Breweries Ltd took over the brewery late in 1995, and reopened it as the Gold Coast Brewery Pty Ltd. Later, the name was changed to the Masthead Brewery. CUB closed the brewery on 23 February 2003 and the equipment was put into storage.
