Carlton Brewery Ale ‘First Everywhere’ Red Poster

$24.00$85.00

Carlton Brewery was the forerunner of Carlton & United Breweries Ltd. First known as the Union Brewery, it was started in August 1858 by Theodore Rosenberg who began brewing Bavarian ‘Lagerbeer’. Edward Latham took over the brewery in 1865 and is considered by many historians to be the founder of what is now Carlton & United Breweries Ltd. Latham was said to be ‘a man of unswerving integrity and an ornament to the brewing profession’. Among other deeds of benevolence, Latham founded and financed the Clergymen’s Retreat at Queenscliff.

This poster was produced after the amalgamation in 1907 and before 1910. After Queen Victoria’s death Edward VII became King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland and Emperor of India from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910. The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward was related to royalty throughout Europe.

The united breweries had a history of putting the monarch on their labels. This poster would have sat on or near the bar to advertise that beer. There are two versions of this poster one with a red background  and one with a dark green background. Go to BPoo61 to see the green version.
