Cohn Bros 6o’clock Lager Poster

The brewing interests of the Cohn Bros (which had started in Bendigo in 1858),
together with forty freehold hotels, and the mortgages, bills of sale and bank
guarantees on an additional forty hotels, were sold to Carlton & United Breweries
Ltd on 30 April 1925, and beer production ceased at Bendigo. Cohn Bros continued
to produce aerated waters, ginger beers, cordials and 6 o’clock Lager. Cohn’s 6
o’clock Lager was produced without alcohol so that it could be sold legally after the
six o’clock closing time.

Six o’clock closing time was introduced in Australia during WWI, compelling public
houses to stop serving alcohol at 6pm. It was designed to improve public morals
and support women at home. However, the law inadvertently encouraged binge
drinking, which came to be known as the six o’clock swill.

The label includes the Australian Red Ensign on the left hand side, which is the flag
under which Australians fought in both world wars. Based on the graphic imagery
the poster was produced in the late 1920’s.

envelope (sandwiched between cardboard stiffeners to eliminate damage). Our
