Black Horse Brewery Echuca Poster

George Elliott started the Black Horse Brewery Echuca in 1875. The site of the
building had been well chosen for the purposes of a brewery. It was situated south
of Echuca, on the bank of the Campaspe river, which was not only well elevated
above the ordinary lay of the surrounding land, but had what is not readily to be
found elsewhere; a nice sloping terrace, which gradually descended to the water’s
edge. As description of the brewery at the time stated that the main building was 40
x 40 feet, and was a substantial weatherboard construction, with a shingle roof and
fitted up with a twelve hogshead plant.

In 1877 Mr. Albert Elliott and Mr. James Nelson Cleig, succeeded Messrs. S. E.
Elliott and Co. in the business. In 1879 Mr. O’Grady from the Royal Hotel in Moama
took over the brewery, which he continued both as a brewery and also as a factory
for lemonade, ginger beer and cordials.

The poster was printed between 1875 and 1877 and graphically shows the
working/social aspect of hop processing in colonial times.
