Hunter Bros. Kent Brewery Bendigo Poster

$24.00$85.00

The Hunter brothers were well-known personalities in the Bendigo district, and from father to sons their brewing and soft-drink businesses spanned a period of almost seventy years. George Frederick Hunter had started the Kent Brewery in partnership with James Liddle. The two of them had been together at the Edinburgh Brewery, but Liddle stayed for only a few months at the Kent.

The Kent Brewery was actually the premises of Slattery’s Brewery, which had closed in the late 1860s. As the years passed, the Kent Brewery prospered and expanded, selling a large range of pale ales and stout. Some of the bottle labels depicted a greyhound, which formed part of the Hunter crest.

George Hunter’s wife, Elizabeth, became the proprietor in 1886, and in 1895 she formed a partnership with her sons, Frederick and Thomas. The business traded as Hunter Brothers Kent Brewery until 1913, when it was taken over by the Bendigo & Northern District Cooperative Brewing Co. Ltd.

No longer brewers, the Hunter brothers continued in business as manufacturers of aerated waters, and in 1914 they joined the Steward brothers to form Steward & Hunter Pty Ltd. Unfortunately, the business was placed in liquidation in 1917, but the following year the Hunter brothers were trading again. Thomas O. Hunter was in charge from 1923 to 1939.
