Phoenix Ale & Stout ‘The Joy of Life’ Poster

The Phoenix Brewery Co ltd in Fremantle was started in February 1898 as the Fremantle Brewing & Ice Co. Ltd by Albert Walmsley. He had a 60 foot suspension bridge built across the river from his house to the brewery, but after less than three years he went into voluntary liquidation.

The name was changed to the Phoenix Brewery in 1902, but the brewery closed on 30 April 1904. The premises were later purchased by the nearby Castlemaine Brewery.

This is a cracker of a poster designed by C Arthur Von Tosseau (or Arthur Niven Tossau or Arthur Tozzart and/or other name variations along the way). He made his living for a large part of his life traveling around Australia performing as a sketch artist in public places such as the Manly Corso, as well as regional centres across the country. One gets the impression he was quite skilled at self-promotion as he appeared regularly on radio programs and was often available to be interviewed on his arrival in a new town with his show. He called himself ‘The Poster King’.

At the age of 54, while traveling with his Poster King show, Arthur Tosseau died at the wheel of his car.
