Resch’s Pilsener ‘19th Hole’ Poster Sydney

$24.00$85.00

In 1895 Allt’s Brewery & Wine & Spirit Co. Ltd, the holding company of the Waverley Brewery, was in liquidation, and Edmund Resch was brought in as manager. Resch ultimately took over the company in 1897. Edmund Resch still called his business the Waverley Brewery and it was destined to become one of the largest breweries in Sydney.

The business and property of the Waverley Brewery were taken over by Tooth & Co. Ltd in 1929 but the brewery continued to operate as a separate unit, brewing the same products and using the same name of Waverley Brewery. This poster was commissioned by Resch’s Brewery to be reproduced as a poster for their pubs.

This image is considered to be the icon of Australian golf from the post-war period in Australia and was drawn by Alan Douglas Baker. Baker trained at the J.S. Watkins Art School before establishing a reputation as an artist of portraits, still life and landscapes. Like fellow artist Henry Hanke, he had a second career producing pub paintings and posters by Tooth & Co. Baker’s work is held in AGNSW, NGA and other public collections.
