Tooheys Extra Dry ‘Greener Pastures’ Poster

Tooheys (Longneck) Dry was introduced in 1988. Dry beers were successful in other markets overseas so Tooheys decided to try and create a new beer market segment in Australia.

After its great marketing success in Japan, the term ‘dry beer’ was taken up in North America. The term ‘dry’ refers to a beer which is fully fermented, or fermented for longer in the brewing process so that more of the residual sugars are consumed by the yeast and turned into alcohol. While most beers have very little sugars left in the brew after fermentation, dry beers have even less!

Dry beer is characterised as crisp and refreshing mouth feel. It uses a delicate balance of subtle hops and malt that results in low bitterness and provides an easy drinking experience with mild taste.

Tooheys Extra Dry was sold throughout Australia, though only available in bottles (345ml and 696ml) until late 2005 when it began to be sold on tap. It is the 5th most popular beer in Australia, by volume sold.

In May 2006, Tooheys Extra Dry Platinum, a beer with increased alcohol content of 6.5% (later reduced to 5.2%), was launched, with the first shipment selling out in days. It is sold in 8-packs as opposed to the traditional 6-packs most bottled beers are packaged in.
