Tooth’s Brewery Beenleigh Pot Still Rum Poster

John Tooth, a native of Kent, England, realised the potential for a brewery in Sydney, and in partnership with his brother-in-law, Charles Newnham, built a brewery in 1835 on a 5-acre block of land at what was then called Blackwattle Creek.

During the early part of the twentieth century the company expanded through the acquisition of many country and city breweries. Most were closed, effectively shutting out competition, but some continued brewing for a few more years. Many of the closed breweries were used as depots.

The Beenleigh Rum Distillery was built in 1884. It is Australia’s oldest distillery that is still working today. Francis Gooding and John Davy were given a property in 1861 which they named Beenleigh in Queensland. They planted sugar cane and built a sugar mill which was called Beenleigh Sugar Mill.

During the 1960s and 70s, Beenleigh outsold it largest rival, Bundaberg Rum. Over the years, it lost market share and rebranded under different guises after being sold to successive owners.

I have included this poster because Tooth’s brewery was their distributor. They also sold other spirits and a lot of the other major breweries also sold spirits under licence.
