Brewhouse Operations Australia Ltd was a company set up by Graham Howard, who intended to design and build small breweries for anyone who was interested in starting up a boutique brewery. The idea had merit, since in the mid-1980s entrepreneurs were clamouring to get into the apparently highly-profitable, specialty-brewing business.

The Colonial Brewing Co. was formed, and Graham Howard set up a working example of his proposed breweries at the Waterloo Hotel in Fortitude Valley at a cost of $500,000. The brewery and tavern complex, with glass viewing-windows and highly-polished copper kettles and vats, was largely aimed at the tourist market. The variety of beers produced included Valley Gold Pilsener, Wheat, Colonial Real Ale and Settlers Extra Stout. Most of the beer was sold in draught through the Waterloo Hotel and to other Brisbane hotels.

The brewing side of the business was not a profitable venture, and by September 1989 brewing had been discontinued.
