Cohn’s Brewery Excelsior Lager Beer Poster Bendigo

In 1882 Cohn Bros’ Victoria Brewery produced the first successful lager beer in Australia under the brand name Excelsior. They sent family back to Bavaria to learn the process and to collect the bottom fermenting yeast. To maintain a chilled temperature, the company installed the first refrigeration and ice making plant invented by James Harrison. This beer was the first lager beer made in the traditional manner with Bavarian lager yeast only made possible in the hot Australian conditions by refrigeration.

Harrison founded the Geelong Advertiser newspaper and was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council and Victorian Legislative Assembly. Harrison is also remembered as the first inventor of the mechanical refrigeration process creating ice and founder of the Victorian Ice Works and as a result, is often called ‘the father of refrigeration’. In 1873 he won a gold medal at the Melbourne Exhibition by proving that meat kept frozen for months.
