Elliott’s Brewery Deniliquin Poster

$24.00$85.00

This Deniliquin Brewery, built by George Elliott of Sandhurst, Victoria, was set on 5 acres of land that had been bought for £225 in February 1866. The brewery was the first of Deniliquin’s ventures into secondary industry. It followed the settlement of the area by sheep breeders in 1858, and was to become an important part of the town’s economy for fifty-seven years. This poster was produced in the 1870s and the rooster became his trade mark with the motto dun vivo cano which means As long as I live, I will sing.

George Elliott built up a fine business, and took on Phillip Holler as a partner in 1880. Early in 1884 the Riverine Brewery, Aerated Waters & Milling Co. Ltd was floated. During World War I the company’s fortunes began to decline. The plant was later modernised, but at a meeting of shareholders held on 28 June 1924 it was resolved to discontinue brewing and to concentrate on the mill, wines, spirits and cordial departments, and to act as distributors for Carlton & United Breweries Ltd of Melbourne.
