Foster’s Lager Beer, Melbourne

$24.00$85.00

Two American brothers, William Manning and Ralph Rose Foster, came to Melbourne to start a brewery in 1887. Historians really didn’t know why they came, or where they went. Until now!

Ralph was the older brother of William (by 10 years) who came to Melbourne in June 1886 from St Louis via Japan, China, Singapore and Sydney. He was on the run from his creditors due to the insolvency of his St Louis merchant tea
business to the tune of US$200,000. He found his way to Melbourne, a very wealthy vibrant city that didn’t have a lager beer brewery, unlike St Louis.

William followed shortly after to Melbourne with wife Annie and son William Goodwin (born in St Louis). William, probably under the advice of Ralph, imported a complete Lager Brewing plant from New York to Collingwood and opened it in 1888. This poster was a generic stock poster available in New York where you could overprint your company name and was brought out with the lager equipment plant. You can see a Union soldier, bear, elk and what looks like a beaver in the image.

After they built and had the brewery operational William sold the brewery within eight months for £43,000. Ralph had no financial interest in the sale, only a clause about not working in the industry or building a brewery in Victoria. Because of the exclusion clauses, William and Ralph went to Sydney where William was negotiating the construction of a lager brewery. William took ill and died in 1891 and is buried in the Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
