Geelong Bitter Ale Volum Brewery Poster

The Volum Brewery was second only to the Ballarat Brewery as the longest-running
brewery to operate in country Victoria. Brewing continued for 113 years, starting in
1845 as the Geelong Brewery, and changing to the Volum Brewery when Captain
James Volum purchased the property in January 1857.

By 1891 output of the brewery had increased to 350 hogsheads of beer per month,
plus 2500 dozen bottles of ale and stout, much of which went to Melbourne and
nearby provincial towns. In 1953 the business was acquired by the Ballarat Brewing
Co. Ltd. This poster was produced in the 1930’s.

In 1958 Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), Melbourne, took over all the brewing
operations of the Ballarat Brewery which included the Volum Brewery. Brewing was
discontinued at Geelong and beer was transported by tanker from the CUB brewery in Melbourne and
put into kegs at Geelong. Geelong Bitter Ale was marketed in Geelong and surrounding areas.
