James Hedley landed at Melbourne in 1856 at the age of eighteen. He took up gold-digging at Ballarat, and became an engine driver and bookkeeper before returning to the goldfields, where he earned good money.

After working as a traveller at James Steward’s Albion Brewery in Ballarat, James Hedley and his brother, William, began brewing in 1874 at the northern Victorian township of Bridgewater, on the Loddon River. They stayed in business for sixteen years, and prizes were taken all over the country, as well as in London, England.

The Hedley brothers retired in 1890, and the Bridge­­­water Brewery was sold to the partnership of George Elliott and Phillip Holler. They lasted three years. The brewery premises were then purchased by the Cohn Brothers of Bendigo.
