Ye Olde Tymes Brewerie Richmond, Latham’s Prize Ale Poster

$24.00$85.00

The brewery was first known as the Southern Brewery and the owners, the Findlay brothers, brewed excellent beer for seventeen years. The brewery had closed in 1891, but the following year it was reopened by Edward Latham, considered by some to be the founder of the Carlton Brewery. He had retired from the Carlton Brewery in 1884, and when he started brewing again in the old Southern Brewery premises he chose a quaint name reminiscent of old England — Ye Olde Tymes Brewerie — and traded as E. Latham & Sons Pty Ltd.

The brewery was refitted with new equipment including an enormous 7500-gallon capacity vat. The Latham family concentrated on the production of ale that was sold in bulk and in jars for family use, through stores and grocery shops.

During 1894 ‘Edward Latham was fined a nominal penalty of 5 shillings with one guinea costs for allowing smoke from the chimney of his brewery to cause a nuisance’. After ten years the business was no longer viable, and the brewery was taken over in 1901 by the Carlton Brewery Ltd, and closed. Years later the premises were used as a jam factory.
