Little Creatures Brewery ‘Rusty. Smooth’ Rogers’ Ale Poster

Little Creatures is a brewery based in Fremantle, Western Australia, operating as a subsidiary of the Japanese firm Kirin Company. It is owned by Little World Beverages, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lion Nathan which is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Kirin.

Little World Beverages Pty Ltd (LWB) is an Australian beverage and hospitality company, best known for its ownership of the Little Creatures Brewery. LWB holding Company was founded by Howard Cearns (marketing specialist), Nic Trimboli (restaurateur) and Phil Sexton (master brewer), all of whom previously worked with the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. Cearns came up with the name after reading about little creatures wandering from ale house to ale house in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and at the time thinking that it sounded like yeast fermentation.

The Little Creatures Brewery opened in November 2000 near the Fremantle fishing boat harbour. The site had previously been an old boat yard and then a crocodile farm.

The brewery operates from a large, open plan building where visitors can view the operation of the brewery as they dine in the restaurant or enjoy a drink at the bar. In 2008, a larger brewhouse facility was commissioned. Beers include Little Creatures Pale Ale and Pilsner. All are available at major liquor stores nationally. Originally owned by Little World Beverages, the company was taken over in mid 2012 by the Japanese owned Lion Nathan.

In March 2009, LWB opened a second operation, White Rabbit Brewery, in Healesville, Victoria. White Rabbit is a smaller operation than Little Creatures, with distinct branding and products. They market various ales including White Rabbit Dark Aleand White Rabbit White Ale. The Healesville brewery is also where the Pipsqueak Cider is produced.

In 2013 another brewery was opened in Geelong, Victoria, at a cost of $60 million. Brewing capacity is reported as 10 million litres a year, or 80 kegs an hour. They amalgamated the two breweries in the same production facility.
