Robert Montgomerie had gained his brewing and malting experience in Tasmania. After arriving in Melbourne, he became head brewer at McCracken’s City Brewery, achieving considerable success with that company for eleven years, and in 1884 he branched out on his own. He designed and built his own brewery in six months: it was a three-storey building with lofty towers, fitted out with the best equipment available, and stood at the corner of King and Jeffcott Streets, West Melbourne. Although the business was floated as the New Brewery Ltd in 1888, it was still called Mont­gomerie’s Brewery. The brewery closed in 1910.

Montgomerie was an excellent brewer and the high quality of his beer was widely acclaimed. He was awarded a medal at the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London for his Ordinary Ale. He also made Pale Ale, Lager Beer, Malt Ale, Golden Ale and Stout. He was the first brewer in Australia to introduce the eight-hour system of shift work, and he had men working ‘around the clock’ on three shifts. Many other breweries adopted this practice.
