Weaver & Co Dandelion Ale

$24.00$85.00

The following is a 1886 newspaper article about Weaver & Co.
Weaver & Co.’s Cordial Factory was situated in Elizabeth Lane, just off Elizabeth Street Hobart. Started in a very small way as far back as 1869, the business had gradually developed into the largest of its kind in Tasmania, and the excellent quality of their manufacture is testified to by their being found in the great majority of Tasmanian Hotels. On entering we were shown over the premises by the manager (Mr Cuttress).
The first department is used for storing hogsheads of dandelion ale preparatory to its being bottled for sale. Two of Boldt and Vogel’s bottling and corking machines are used, capable of doing 60 dozen an hour each. Opposite these stands are six bins which when full will hold over 1000 doses. Proceeding further we enter the packing room, where, in summer time, two packers are kept constantly employed. Before entering the aerated water department, our attention was called to the complete system of filterory carried on by the firm, by which the most muddy water can be converted into the finest crystal in a few minutes. These filters are able to supply sufficient water when the machinery is being worked up to the limit, which is about 700 dozen a day in 10 hours.
An analysis of Tasmanian-brewed dandelion ale by the Government Analyst of Victoria, Mr. William Johnson, and by Mr. C. B. Blackett, a leading pharmacist in Melbourne, showing that the alcoholic strength was about 2 and 3-5ths per cent. All makers had not got their beverages analysed, but none of them came up to 5 per cent. Mr. Weaver said that dandelion ale was brewed to supply their patrons to replace the use of intoxicants. He knew many cases where its use had been the means of weaning persons from strong drink. Weaver & Co used over six tons weight of dandelion root every summer.
(Comment: If this was a non-alcoholic beverage at the time what was the alcoholic strength of rest?)
