Tooth’s XXX Ale ‘Newtown vs South Sydney Rabbitohs’ Rugby League Poster

$24.00$85.00

John Tooth, a native of Kent, England, realised the potential for a brewery in Sydney, and in partnership with his brother-in-law, Charles Newnham, built a brewery in 1835 on a 5-acre block of land at what was then called Blackwattle Creek.

During the early part of the twentieth century the company expanded through the acquisition of many country and city breweries. Most were closed, effectively shutting out competition, but some continued brewing for a few more years. Many of the closed breweries were used as depots.

KB (Kent Brewery) Lager was introduced in 1918 as their first ‘lager beer’. It was after this event that the marketing department embarked on an expansive poster and pub signage campaign that proved extremely popular and ingrained into Sydney culture.

The first pub paintings advertised Tooheys beer, but its rival, Tooth & Co, quickly recognised the value of the paintings for commercial purposes and commissioned the Rousel studios to supply artwork for its hotels in preference to Tooheys. This arrangement continued until 1956. In an article in the Sydney Morning Herald  described how these artworks were produced and why at the time of writing they are highly collectable: “The process began with an artist hand painting a transfer, which was then slid onto the plate of glass and coated with a layer of gum arabic. Finally a frame was added. Each sign took about a week to complete. There were no duplicates. Each one is an original work of art, worth more to a modern collector if the artist has signed it or it can be identified by his style.”

This poster depicts a game of Rugby League between South Sydney Rabbitohs and Newtown. Going by the jumpers this painting was produced circa 1930-1944.
