Scott & Griffiths ‘The King of Beers’ Launceston Poster

In 1855 John Scott joined his future father-in-law, John Griffiths to open a brewery
in Launceston and the partnership traded as John Scott & Co., Tamar Brewery.
John Scott was the first to produce bottled beer in Launceston, and his corks were
branded Scott & Co.’s Tasmanian Ale. Bitter ale and stout were also supplied in
casks, as well as in bottles.

By 1872 the Tamar Brewery was quite impressive, with substantial buildings and
facilities covering a large area. Thomas Griffiths became a partner in 1873; the
business then traded as Scott & Griffiths. This poster was produced in the late
1890s.

Years later the brewery was running below capacity. The cause was said to be ‘a
combination of general poverty, excessive competition and lack of promotion’. After
brewing for sixty-two years the Tamar Brewery was purchased by the Esk Brewery
(Boags) in 1917, and closed.
