Tooth’s Sydney Bitter Ale Poster

John Tooth, a native of Kent, England, realised the potential for a brewery in Sydney, and in partnership with his brother-in-law, Charles Newnham, built a brewery in 1835 on a 5-acre block of land at what was then called Blackwattle Creek.

During the early part of the twentieth century the company expanded through the acquisition of many country and city breweries. Most were closed, effectively shutting out competition, but some continued brewing for a few more years. Many of the closed breweries were used as depots.

In 1916 Mr. Thomas Breheny head brewer at the Abbotsford brewery in Melbourne was offered and accepted the position of head brewer to Messrs. Tooth and Co. Ltd., the premier position in the Australian brewing world at that time. Mr. Breheny had not held this position long before his marked ability gained him world-wide recognition,’ and at the time he is generally regarded amongst the trade as one of the very best ‘brewers in the British Empire. During his term of office with Tooths Ltd., the highest capitalised brewing company in Australia, he remodelled its main buildings completely and introduced the bottom-fermentation process there, well over a quarter of a million pounds being spent under his supervision, upon plant, machinery, and alterations to effect the alteration. Furthermore, he was responsible for the production and introduction to the Australian market of Sydney’s three ‘best sellers’  at that time — ‘K.B.’ Lager, ‘T.B.’ Light Ale, and ‘Sydney’ Bitter.

The marketing department embarked on an expansive poster and pub signage campaign that proved extremely popular and ingrained these brands into the Sydney culture.
